Advertising or Education? Sometimes It’s Hard To Tell

febrero 8, 2008

Lisa NealAquí os traemos este texto de

It can be a fine line that distinguishes advertising from education. Each seeks to modify beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors through the timely presentation of information. Each seeks to engage the viewer, to address a particular need, to pose a solution to a problem.

Successful advertising, like successful learning, is remembered. The jingle plays in our memory, the brand jumps off the store shelf, and the phone number springs to mind when it’s time to call for a pizza.

Sometimes it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between education and advertising. Take, for example, the message that plays when you call a business or service. Generally you’re stuck listening to music that you would not normally add to your playlist, to say the least. With a speakerphone or wireless headset, it is easy to do something else while waiting. But instead, some companies make it a teachable moment.

At least one medical center we know now plays the «Health News Network» for those waiting on the phone. One can learn about the signs of diabetes and the advantages of early detection, anxiety disorders and their symptoms, what a heart attack feels like, and other medical information. Each snippet ends with a phone number to learn more, get a physician referral, or join a support group. While it was ultimately advertising, the emphasis was on good information.

The principles that make these messages successful are the same, whether they’re instances of education or advertising. Over the course of a typical waiting period, the «Health News Network» is repeated a few times. As we know, this can aid learning. It is also effective advertising-which is why the typical ad repeats the brand being advertised three times in 15 seconds.(leer más…)

The 2007 Edublog Awards have been announced, and Classroom 2.0 was awarded «best educational use of a social networking service.» The list (with descriptions) of all of the nominees in all categories can be found here, and is well worth reviewing. Congratulations to all of you here who have made Classroom 2.0 such a good example of the positive power of social networking in education.

Pues a lo que vamos, el anuncio: de la reunión de hoy.

Tomorrow I’m experimenting with a live talk show program by starting a discussion on using Ning in education. If it goes well, I’d like to consider a regular (weekly) show on Web 2.0 in education.
Here is the link to the first educational «Ning-cast»: http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/12083. It is scheduled for tomorrow, January 3, at 6pm Pacific / 9pm Eastern. You can listen to the show live (or later recorded) without signing up at Talkshoe.com, but if you do sign up for a free account, you can have the choice to participate in our show online, by Skype/VOIP phone, or regular land line. Those who choose to download the Talkshoe software can also particpate in a chat window. There are good instructions on the site.

If you aren’t going to download the software (PC & Mac only), you can call in as follows:

1. Dial: (724) 444-7444
2. Enter: 12083 # (Talkcast ID)
3. Enter: 1 # or your PIN (you set up a PIN number if you register)

OK, so for the brave pioneers, tomorrow night! Talk to you then.

Steve

Unleashing Creativity With Student Podcasts

marzo 16, 2007

By Kristen Chick

Professors aren’t the only ones making podcasts for the purpose of education. Their students are being required to create them as part of the curriculum. «The creativity that gets unleashed by the podcasts is just phenomenal,» said Nanette Levinson, associate professor at American University. «It really enhances [students’] creativity and their ability to communicate effectively.»

Get the tools you need to stop adware and viruses from these expert resources.

Producing podcasts is not a typical assignment in college writing class, but it’s what Heather Schell requires from her students at George Washington University.

Schell, assistant professor in the school’s University Writing Program, asked her freshman writing class last year to produce a weekly «radio show,» a series of podcasts they wrote, recorded, edited and posted on the Web.

«I really enjoyed it,» said one of the students, Kirsten Gilbert, who began the class as a «technophobe» and ended as a podcast pro. «I learned a lot about podcasting. It taught you how to write pieces to be heard, not to be read.»

Schell is among an increasing number of college professors to use podcasts — audio files that can downloaded to iPods and computers — as they discover the advantages of technologically savvy teaching, said Suzan Harkness, assistant professor of political science at the University of the District of Columbia(leer más…)

Open Source, Education, Laptop 100$, higher education

1) How the Open Source Movement Has Changed Education: 10 Success Stories en Online Education Database
//oedb.org/oedb_logo.gif” porque contiene errores.
How would you like to study at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for free? It has been nearly six years since MIT first announced their MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) program. More recently, MIT announced that the OCW program, a free and open educational resource (OER) for educators, students, and self-learners around the world, is online and will be completed by 2008. The OCW provides open access to course materials for up to 1,550 MIT courses, representing 34 departments and all five MIT schools. The goal is to include materials from all MIT courses by next year. 2)Can the «$100 Laptop» Change the World?//elearnmag.org/graphics/logo.gif” porque contiene errores.

Here’s an outrageous idea: What if every child in the world could have a free personal laptop? Put some e-books on it, make it Web-capable, and add a palette of media tools so children could work on creative projects. Wouldn’t that be incredible?

When Nicholas Negroponte proposed this idea at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January, 2005, it certainly seemed that way—like a noble dream. Two years later, that dream is an actual product that’s just around the corner from delivery to the global schoolroom. This is not just any laptop, but one designed to challenge our pre-conceptions of what a personal computer can be, and of how it might be used to teach our children how to learn. Its influence may soon be felt far and wide, and in previously unimaginable ways. (leer más…)

3) What is the future of higher education? en ODCE Conference Blog

//www.oln.org/i/odcelogo_07.gif” porque contiene errores.
During a lunch conversation, focus turned to the future of universities and colleges. The question was essentially: Are universities capable of adapting to today’s climate? Can they adjust to reflect the needs of learners? Many have expressed skepticism. Several years ago, in discussion with a university president, I was informed that the concepts I presented with connectivism made sense, were valid, and largely reflected the changes required by universities. But they weren’t going to happen. Why? The system of policy, funding, research, tenure, and mindsets were to rigid to result in the quantum change needed. I’ve heard of several prominent thinkers recently who share this concern.
