Bueno, pues ya tenemos en el aire el nuevo número de Innovate… Así comienza la presentación de James L. Morrison su Editor-in-Chief.

Few things are more fascinating—and more futile—than consideration of the future. What type of world will our students inherit? What types of attitudes and skills will be needed for participation in a global world? How should we teach in an era of abundant information? What role do educators play? Is copyright in its current form sustainable?

Many of these challenging questions are in their early form, certain to be rewritten and augmented with new concerns as the swirl of change continues its uncertain path. This edition of Innovate offers points of discussion against this complex, uncertain background by considering the changing shape of pedagogy, the nature of knowledge itself, the future of copyright, and the likely patterns of technology adoption in the future. Other authors take on the place of online portfolios in education and offer a tool for strategic planning to face the future.

Ya tenemos en el aire la nueva edición de Innovate.(Feb-Mar 08). Así nos la presente su editor James L. Morrison (Editor-in-Chief):

Why do we need to examine a research base in K-20 online learning? Online learning is transforming teaching, providing new instructional delivery models, and expanding access to education. Effective online instructional practices are increasingly supported by a growing evidence base that shows how various programs, courses, and instructional models can improve learning, increase student engagement, and catalyze innovation in education. This special issue offers a range of studies that contribute to an evidence-based framework to sustain further innovation in online teaching and learning.

In the first article of this special issue, Susan Lowes explores the transformation of both the teacher and the courses he or she teaches that can occur when a teacher moves between face-to-face and online environments. Based on a survey of 215 Virtual High School teachers, Lowes focuses her article on the “trans-classroom” teacher who works in both face-to-face and online classrooms and attempts to track how such teachers make shifts in ideas, strategies, and practices that constrain or improve their practice in either venue.

Edward Berger

Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
University of Virginia

Edward Berger received his PhD degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1996, and he has been a faculty member in the field for the past 10 years. He started his academic career at the University of Cincinnati where he enjoyed research and teaching success and was recognized with the UC College of Engineering’s highest teaching honor (Professor of the Year) in the 2001-2002 academic year. He is presently associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Virginia where he has been podcasting course content since early 2006. He also serves on two committees for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), for vibration and sound and for nanosystems. He has authored over 25 technical publications and secured research funding from the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and Sandia National Laboratory. His current technical research focuses on nanoscale material characterization and atomic force microscopy, and his educational interests include instructional design using technology, especially tablet PCs and podcasting.

Welcome to the October/November issue of Innovate. In this issue we provide readers with a survey of technology-enhanced proposals and initiatives in a diverse range of contexts—within the academy, beyond the academy, and across the globe.

In the midst of rising printing costs and reduced university support, academic publishers now face serious challenges in meeting the needs of the professional communities they serve. To address these challenges, university presses in the near future are likely find new technologies and new business models indispensable for fulfilling their mission. In an interview with Chad Trevitte, Charles Henry discusses how digital publishing has allowed Rice University Press to reemerge as a pioneer in innovative practice. Henry’s description of this initiative—its origins, its rationale, its strategies, and its plans for further development—outlines a potential precedent for more widespread revitalization of university presses.

Welcome to the August/September issue of Innovate. This issue explores the theoretical and practical implications of a distinctive mode of instruction known as «ee-learning»—a combination of the information technologies associated with electronic learning and the pedagogical principles associated with experiential learning. As the articles in this issue suggest, this approach to instruction holds much promise for revitalizing many sectors of education, from K-12 to higher education, governmental, and corporate settings.

A Model of Learning for Net Generation Students

Synopsis

In this article Donald Philip describes Knowledge Building, a pedagogy based on the way research organizations function. The global economy, Philip argues, is driving a shift from older, industrial models to the model of the business as a learning organization. The cognitive patterns of today’s Net Generation students, formed by lifetime exposure to interactive media, may prepare them for the heterogeneous, distributed systems that characterize tomorrow’s learning organizations, but they do need to learn the processes of innovation, creativity, and collaboration that these organizations will value. Knowledge Building, which engages students in building knowledge about a given question in an open, collaborative environment, provides one model for teaching these vital skills. In the knowledge-building paradigm, students form research groups through their interactions with one another and with an online learning environment called Knowledge Forum as they work on problems of understanding. This model, Philip argues, will prepare students for the distributed, collaborative work environments of learning organizations that value creativity and innovation.View the article.
