A Second Life for Middle School Science.:¿1, 7 millones de dólares sólo para estudiantes selectos?

¿Qué pensáis de las restricciones y espacios virtuales creados ex-profeso para menores? ¿Guetos, reservas indias, control, control parental, control social, libertad?. Son muchos los interrogantes que se nos generan … Aquí tenéis una noticia sobre 1,7 millones de dólares de la National Science Foundation para crear una isla protegida (de qué y para qué) en Second Life, al que tendrán acceso únicamente estudiantes selectos (¿quién los elegirá, en base a qué criterios?, uff!!!). Tenéis la noticia en la portada del Russ College de la Ohio ….

Second Life, the virtual online world that is catching the attention of colleges and universities for its educational possibilities, hasn’t been an option for middle school use because of its age limit. Although most 12-year-old students would probably find the site’s graphical elements and endless social possibilities intriguing, Second Life’s policy bars anyone younger than 13 from accessing any aspect of the site.

Now, using part of a $1.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation, graduate students from Ohio University’s Russ College of Engineering and Technology have changed that. Working with Linden Lab, the company that owns Second Life, the grad students have developed a special protected island within the virtual world where only select middle school students are allowed. Teaching teens in Second Life has issues – many schools teach 11 and 12 year olds as part of their age range, but SL won’t let them in until they’re 13. At the other end, once you reach 18 you’re kicked off to the main grid – sometime in your final year at school for many. (leer más…)
