Educators discuss how online courses can help meet underserved students’ needs and fulfill course requirements

As online learning becomes more of a strategic resource for K-12 and higher-education institutions to supplement traditional courses, education leaders are starting to discuss how online learning can help support minority students’ instructional needs.

In a recent webinar hosted by the North American Council for Online Learning (NACOL), titled “Increasing Academic Offerings for Minority Students through Online Learning,” panelists Ray Rose, director of programs at MentorNet, Sharnell Jackson, chief eLearning officer for the Chicago Public Schools, and Themy Sparangis, chief technology officer for the Los Angeles Unified School District, discussed how schools can leverage online learning programs to provide high-quality educational opportunities for underrepresented populations. Schools respond to iPhone’s popularity. Cara Branigan

Campus officials roll out programs to take advantage of the iPhone’s potential as a converged, mobile learning device

[Abilene Christian University will give free iPhones or iPod touches to incoming freshmen this fall.]

Responding to the iPhone’s popularity among students, many universities now are rolling out initiatives that aim to take advantage of its potential as a converged, mobile learning device.

The timing is good for such initiatives, because earlier this month, Apple Inc. moved to expand the use of its iPhone by unveiling software intended to allow third-party developers to build new iPhone applications.

On March 14, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., released a version of its web site’s home page specially designed for the iPhone.

“More and more of our students, faculty, and staff are using the iPhone to access the internet,” said Melanie Moran, assistant director of the Vanderbilt News Service. “We created a version of the Vanderbilt web site that takes advantage of the iPhone’s powerful software and intuitive multi-touch interface.”(leer más…)
