Abstract

This chapter reports on a two-year research study of innovation in European higher education eLearning strategies. A mixed-method approach was adopted to the problem of identifying examples of innovation. A distinction is drawn between two kinds of innovation that require different methods of effective detection: innovation in standards-based institution-wide systems and innovation through personal technological exploration of end-user tools. The study built on and refined a number of existing instruments to help identify innovation and explain success at both institution and programme levels. Where possible the study estimated the impact of the implemented eLearning programmes, but the emphasis was on illuminating a range of innovative eLearning strategy cases, rather than necessarily determining best practice. The study provides some evidence of the factors that those who have implemented successful eLearning strategies consider to be critical, drawing on the innovators’ diverse experiences of having to refine their strategies over time.(leer más…)

EUA President to present Lisbon declaration to Europe’s Ministers

The ‘Lisbon declaration’, based on the outcomes of EUA’s 4th Convention, was officially adopted by the EUA Council in Brussels on 13th April.

EUA President, Professor Georg Winckler

The declaration focuses on five themes critical to the future of European higher education, and sets out a comprehensive and challenging agenda with higher education institutions at the heart of Europe’s future.

EUA President, Professor Georg Winckler, will present the declaration to the 46 Education Ministers at the opening of the biannual Bologna Ministerial conference in London on 16 May.

How would you like to study at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for free? It has been nearly six years since MIT first announced their MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) program. More recently, MIT announced that the OCW program, a free and open educational resource (OER) for educators, students, and self-learners around the world, is online and will be completed by 2008. The OCW provides open access to course materials for up to 1,550 MIT courses, representing 34 departments and all five MIT schools. The goal is to include materials from all MIT courses by next year. 2)Can the «$100 Laptop» Change the World? By Laurie Rowell en eLearn Magazine

Here’s an outrageous idea: What if every child in the world could have a free personal laptop? Put some e-books on it, make it Web-capable, and add a palette of media tools so children could work on creative projects. Wouldn’t that be incredible?

When Nicholas Negroponte proposed this idea at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January, 2005, it certainly seemed that way—like a noble dream. Two years later, that dream is an actual product that’s just around the corner from delivery to the global schoolroom. This is not just any laptop, but one designed to challenge our pre-conceptions of what a personal computer can be, and of how it might be used to teach our children how to learn. 3) What is the future of higher education? en ODCE Conference Blog

During a lunch conversation, focus turned to the future of universities and colleges. The question was essentially: Are universities capable of adapting to today’s climate? Can they adjust to reflect the needs of learners? Many have expressed skepticism. Several years ago, in discussion with a university president, I was informed that the concepts I presented with connectivism made sense, were valid, and largely reflected the changes required by universities. But they weren’t going to happen. Why? The system of policy, funding, research, tenure, and mindsets were to rigid to result in the quantum change needed. I’ve heard of several prominent thinkers recently who share this concern. (leer más…)
