Free software turns one PC into two

As school leaders look for inexpensive ways to extend computing resources to every student, a Canadian company says it is giving away software that turns one computer workstation into two.

Userful, a privately held company based in Alberta, makes software that allows a user to connect an extra monitor, USB keyboard, and mouse to a standard computer box, making it possible for two users to work on the same PC at the same time.
Userful’s software giveaway now makes it possible for a user to get this software for free. The free two-user licenses, which originally started as a Christmas promotion, allow computer users with an extra video card (or a dual-head video card) to add an extra workstation. The company offers two free downloads: one that allows the user to turn his or her PC into two independent workstations without affecting any of the software on the hard disk, and one for users already running Linux.(leer más…)

Iglesia y web 2.0:Desde el seminario 2.0…Podcast divino!!!

Bueno aquí tenéis la noticia en aciprensa, weblogs, podcast, web 2.0 desde las alturas, por supuesto made in USA, que aquí tenemos la COPE para reivindicar la lucha (si es preciso armada…de palabras y exabruptos)… y no hacen falta más podcasteros o pancarteros….(según se mire)

Seminaristas hispanos comparten sus testimonios vía web para despertar vocaciones

INDIANA, 20 May. 07 / 10:58 pm (ACI).- Un grupo de cinco seminaristas, estudiantes de teología en el seminario de Saint Meinrad en Indiana, han lanzado un sitio web para promover vocaciones sacerdotales hispanas en los Estados Unidos, con sus propios testimonios. El sitio se llama “Desde el seminario 2.0” y ofrece cinco podcasts en los que se escucha a los seminaristas narrar sus experiencias de cómo y por qué entraron al seminario, así como los obstáculos que superaron, animando a los jóvenes a que “consideren mejor la invitación que les hace Jesús al sacerdocio”. En “Desde el seminario 2.0”, se narran las experiencias vividas por los seminaristas, tocando las preguntas más frecuentes que se hacen los jóvenes al momento de discernir la vocación sacerdotal, además cuentan cómo se ve la vida desde el seminario.

“Pienso que la Iglesia está aprovechando las ventajas de la comunicación por Internet. Cuando yo andaba pensando entrar al seminario, no tenía a la mano ninguna información referente a los seminarios de los Estados Unidos. El entrar al seminario fue dar un salto de fe ya que no sabía que me esperaba. Pienso que éste proyecto, pudiera guiar un poco más a los jóvenes a responder el llamado de Dios por medio de nuestras experiencias”, indicó el director del proyecto, el diácono Ernesto Reynoso de la diócesis de Phoenix.

Los seminaristas encomendaron el proyecto a la Virgen de Guadalupe e invitan a todos a promover el sitio que ayudará a los jóvenes que les gustaría ser sacerdotes pero que carecen de información y guía vocacional.

El proyecto está dirigido principalmente a las posibles vocaciones de los Estados Unidos, sin embargo las experiencias narradas de los seminaristas hacen que el proyecto sea útil y flexible para todos los jóvenes interesados en el sacerdocio de cualquier diócesis de habla hispana.

¿para qué educar?¿Qué está ocurriendo en nuestras sociedades opulentas?. Debemos aprender a desaprender.

Hoy traemos un post de esos que no quisiéramos traer nunca. El post titulado «SLED Community in shock» de Eloise Pasteur, que ya hemos citado varias veces en este blog, a propósito de la matanza en Virginia.

¿Qué está ocurriendo en nuestras sociedades opulentas?. Violencia, pistolas que se compran en el super, soledad entre los niños y niñas, saturación de trabajo, falta de tiempo y de espacio privado, público y compartido, desarraigo….. en fin. Igual que se empieza a reconocer el cambio climático, también deberíamos empezar a reconocer el cambio educativo, este parece que costará más. Mi pésame a las víctimas, que no son sólo las 31 de este caso….

Un ejemplo, hoy el blog de Pablo Mancini se interroga en el post titulado «11-S: El marketing de la provocación«

«¿Es posible parodiar un atentado como el perpetuado contra las Torres Gemelas? Eso se está poniendo en debate en los Estados Unidos a partir del trailer de la película “Postal”, visto en YouTube por más de cien mil personas.»

y uno se pregunta si el gusto por la violencia retransmitida es algo más que el archiconocido debate de la violencia generada por los medios de comunicación (debate fundador de los propios medios audiovisuales). Cuando cientos de miles de personas ven videos en you tube de violaciones, (un ejemplo el de unos niños de instituto vejando a una profesora), y violencia; algo más que los medios de comunicación son los culpables. Irak: cuantos miles de muertos por una mentira? Cómo pueden plantearse de repente ante un caso como este ¿qué está ocurriendo?

En fin, hablamos de nuevos modelos de escuela, de educar con las nuevas tecnología, y lo principal no lo abordamos: ¿para qué educar?. Deberíamos empezar a aprender a desaprender.

SLED community in shock

I’m sure the US in general is in shock at the news of 31 deaths at Virginia Tech at the hands of a gunman.

The educators in Second Life include at least two people from Virginia Tech, both of whom are well, but we are all still in shock. Our thoughts go out to all those from Virginia Tech, and especially those, associated with SL or not, who have lost loved ones.

UPDATE: There is now space on Info Island for flowers and a monument to those that lost their lives.

MIT Second Life Student Design Competition: Hasta el 4 de Mayo

Conveying Residential Living and Culture in Second Life

NEWS 3/21/07: We’re holding an online tutorial in Second Life today at 5pm. The event will be in Second Life, but many of us will be logging on in room 10-337. Stop in and join us!

The goal of this project is to design and create a student created space within Second Life that represents the MIT campus. These architectures will be represented by clusters of pods. The pods will be modular, replicable, and easily customizable, such that any MIT student can join Second Life and with little foreknowledge create and add their own pod to a cluster. It is not necessary for the architecture to resemble the visual appearance of actual MIT structures. What will be important will the manner in which the pods are created, and how they interact and connect with each other.
Each team will be faced with two tasks in this, namely:

1. To submit a written proposal detailing how the pods would be created, describing their properties, and demonstrating how they would fit together

2. To actually create an instance of the proposed pod within Second Life, as described by the design scheme in part 1. Teams may also optionally create a cluster structure.

At the end of the competition submissions will be judged, and the winning team will receive a $500 prize! (leer más…)

[not] One Billion US Dollars for eLearning Possible

Washington (DC, USA), October 2006 – A bill now before the United States Congress could radically transform learning and training in America. If approved, the DO IT bill could generate as much as one billion dollars to support technology-based learning in the US.

Over an extended period, the U.S. Congress has received at least twelve reports and key statements that all point in the same direction: In order to maintain its global leadership through the 21st century, the US must transform its learning and training in all fields of education. Subsequently, the foundation of a national endowment of learning and training is under way, similar to those for the arts or the sciences. DO IT, the Digital Opportunity Investment Trust, could fund projects such as the digitization of library, museum, and university collections, content development of vocational materials for workforce retraining, as well as lifelong-learning support, to name just a few.(leer más…)
